The City of Shawnee, Kansas, hired WSC to update its stand-alone sign ordinance. The City’s goal was to implement content neutral sign regulations that comply with Reed v. Town of Gilbert (2015). Mark White and Sean Scoopmire worked closely with staff to identify other areas for improvement of the sign ordinance. The City adopted the new sign code in January 2022. The sign code:
- Includes a content neutral sign allocation system;
- Provides clear regulation for murals;
- Clarifies sign allowances for multi-tenant uses, such as shopping centers;
- Adds graphics and a user-friendly code layout; and
- Includes updated regulations for digital signs, nonconformities, and abandoned signs.
