White Smith Cousino led a multi-phase project to update the City‘sZoning and Subdivision Regulations. The project began with a series of stake-holder interviews, public workshops, and a diagnosis report. We then prepared an innovative, “composite” zoning ordinance for review and comment. Working with an advisory committee, we prepared a number of drafts for review and comment.
The composite zoning approach is a flexible way to introduce concepts such as conservation design to neighborhoods that want them, while preserving conventional standards where they are appropriate and desired. It is a useful framework to calibrate a wide variety of standards – from urban design to green space- in a variety of contexts.
The ordinance was adopted in 2009.
